Yoga instructors appear supremely mobile, yet teaching creates unique strain patterns. Demonstrating poses repeatedly, adjusting students, and maintaining awareness while teaching creates asymmetric demands. Your personal practice and your teaching practice require different approaches. Teaching yoga differs from practicing yoga. The physical demands of instruction need specific attention beyond your regular practice. JME 1 Look left and then right JME 6 Gently tuck your chin to your chest JME 3 Tilt your head left then right toward your shoulder Demonstration Balance Repeated demonstrations create patterns that differ from flowing practice. JME 150 Sitting in your chair, rotate your upper body both left and right. Don't do this too fast - find what works for you. JME 151 Either sitting or standing, extend one arm up over your head. Bend toward the other side for a gentle stretch in your side body. Return to the middle and repeat. Adjustment Recovery Physically adjusting students strains your body in ways personal practice does not. JME 91 Placing one foot on a slightly elevated surface (or even just in front of you on the floor), rotate your upper body in both direcions. JME 152 Rest one hand either on the back of your chair or desk. With the other arm, rotate toward the ceiling and follow your fingertips with your eyes. Return to the middle and repeat. Hip Asymmetry Correction Demonstrating facing the class creates asymmetric hip patterns. JME 113 Place one knee on your chair and move that knee both forward and back to feel a stretch in the front of your leg. JME 134 One leg at a time, internally rotate your leg - either standing or sitting in your chair. Focus on the rotation - and do it controlled. Wrist Recovery Multiple demonstrations of arm balances and vinyasas load your wrists. JME 196 Hold onto your hand to find a gentle stretch in your forearm and wrist. Don't force any range of motion - listen to your body. JME 189 *Desk Required: With one hand on your desk, bend your upper body forward while maintaining the position of your hand on the desk. Feel a gentle stretch in your forearm and then return to the start. Teaching Schedule Adaptation Heavy teaching days require modified personal practice. Your body needs recovery, not additional loading. Balance your teaching volume with appropriate self-care.
