Deep hip stretches target structures beyond surface muscles: the joint capsule, deep rotators, and fascial connections. Standard stretches address muscle length. Deep stretches address tissue restrictions that limit true joint mobility. These positions require existing flexibility as a foundation. Progress to this routine after establishing baseline hip mobility through gentler exercises. JME 113 Place one knee on your chair and move that knee both forward and back to feel a stretch in the front of your leg. JME 138 Standing with one foot in front of the other, extend the same arm as the foot in front up over your head. Deep External Rotation External rotation accesses the deep lateral rotators beneath the glutes. JME 133 Bring one ankle up to rest on your knee. As you sit in this cross-legged position, rotate your upper body toward the floor to feel a gentle stretch. Don't force your end range - do what works for you. JME 114 Standing on one leg, place the foot of the other leg behind your knee. Then, rotate the elevated knee both forward and back. Deep Internal Rotation Internal rotation stretches the posterior capsule and external rotator muscles. JME 134 One leg at a time, internally rotate your leg - either standing or sitting in your chair. Focus on the rotation - and do it controlled. JME 136 With your chin tucked to your chest, rotate your ankle inward. With your toes facing your other leg, lift your leg at your knee while keeping your chin tucked. Deep Hip Flexion Maximum hip flexion addresses posterior hip structures and hamstring attachments. JME 121 Sitting in your chair, grab onto one leg and pull it toward your chest for a gentle stretch. JME 146 Either with your hands above your head or holding onto your chair, lift one leg up to 90 degrees. Then, bend at your hips to rotate your upper body toward the floor. Combined Deep Stretches These positions combine planes for comprehensive deep hip tissue release. JME 144 For stability, hold onto your chair or desk with one hand. Follow the movement of your leg to the diagram very specifically. Ultimately, you are making a big circle with your knee. You want to be finding your end range of motion at each point. Be slow and controlled - this isn't a race. Find what works for your joints. JME 111 Placing your knee on an elevated surface, rotate your upper body back toward that elevated leg. (This will be very difficult in the office - a bed is ideal for this exercise). Deep Stretch Guidelines Hold deep stretches for 60-90 seconds minimum. The deep structures require sustained pressure to change. Perform this routine 3-4 times weekly. Daily practice increases tissue adaptation rate. Never force deep stretches. Ease into positions gradually. Pain indicates you have exceeded appropriate range. Progressive Hip Programming Deep stretches are advanced work requiring proper progression. simplmobility provides sequenced hip programming that builds toward these positions safely.
