The trapezius divides into three functional regions: upper, middle, and lower. Each performs different actions and develops different tension patterns. Upper traps become hypertonic from stress and desk posture. Middle and lower traps weaken from disuse. This imbalance creates neck pain and shoulder dysfunction. This program addresses all three trap regions through stretching and activation exercises. JME 3 Tilt your head left then right toward your shoulder JME 8 Bring your hand to your head and tilt your head in the same direction. Move your hand away from your face and tilt your head in the other direction. Levator Scapulae Release The levator scapulae works with upper traps and contributes to similar tension patterns. JME 12 Place one hand underneath your leg sitting in a chair and tilt your head toward that side. JME 26 Hold onto the back of your head with your hand and pull gently to one side for a stretch. Middle Trap Activation Middle traps retract your shoulder blades. Strengthening them counteracts forward shoulder posture. JME 165 Either sitting or standing, squeeze your shoulder blades together. JME 159 Sitting in your chair, raise your elbows up toward in front of your face. Then, squeeze your elbows toward the middle. Lower Trap Work Lower traps depress and upwardly rotate your scapula during overhead movement. JME 166 Either sitting or standing, raise your shoulders up both at the same time. JME 35 Slowly shrug your shoulders up. Integrated Trap Movements Real trap function requires coordinated action across all three regions. JME 84 With your arms to your side, shrug your shoulders up and create a circle-like motion. JME 67 Hold onto the back of your head with both hands and slightly lean forward for a gentle neck stretch. Program Implementation Perform this program twice daily: morning and evening. Upper trap stretches help before stressful situations. Each exercise gets 10-15 repetitions or 30 second holds. The full sequence takes 8-10 minutes. Stress accumulates in upper traps. Addressing this tension throughout the day prevents chronic patterns from developing. Complete Neck and Shoulder Health Trap balance is one component of neck and shoulder health. Complete function requires cervical mobility, rotator cuff strength, and postural awareness. simplmobility provides comprehensive upper body programming. Start Your Free Trial
