Deep stretching creates lasting flexibility changes. Longer holds allow tissues to release beyond their initial resistance. The nervous system adapts, permitting greater range of motion. This 10-minute routine emphasizes sustained positions for maximum flexibility gains. Ten exercises target the areas that respond best to deep stretching. Extended holds replace quick movements for greater effect. Use this routine when flexibility is your primary goal. It works best in the evening when muscles are warm from daily activity. Consistent practice produces measurable range of motion improvements. Start Your 14-Day Free Trial The Complete 10-Minute Routine 1. Assisted Neck Stretch (45 seconds each side) Why it works: Deep upper trapezius release. Hand assistance increases intensity for greater effect. JME 8 Bring your hand to your head and tilt your head in the same direction. Move your hand away from your face and tilt your head in the other direction. 2. Seated Lateral Stretch with Anchor (45 seconds each side) Why it works: Anchoring the shoulder maximizes stretch through the levator scapulae. JME 12 Place one hand underneath your leg sitting in a chair and tilt your head toward that side. 3. Open Book Rotation (45 seconds each side) Why it works: Deep thoracic rotation with anchored position. Maximizes spinal mobility. JME 152 Rest one hand either on the back of your chair or desk. With the other arm, rotate toward the ceiling and follow your fingertips with your eyes. Return to the middle and repeat. 4. Side Body Stretch (45 seconds each side) Why it works: Complete lateral chain stretch from hip to armpit. JME 151 Either sitting or standing, extend one arm up over your head. Bend toward the other side for a gentle stretch in your side body. Return to the middle and repeat. 5. Standing Forward Fold (60 seconds) Why it works: Extended hold allows deeper release of the entire posterior chain. JME 94 Slowly bend forward and reach your hands toward the floor. 6. Hamstring Stretch (45 seconds each side) Why it works: Isolated hamstring work for targeted lengthening. JME 173 Find a slightly elevated surface to rest your foot on. Then, once you have stability, bend at your hips and rotate your upper body toward the ground. Find a gentle stretch in your hamstring and return to the starting position. 7. Hip Flexor Mobilization (60 seconds each side) Why it works: Extended hold creates lasting change in hip flexor length. JME 113 Place one knee on your chair and move that knee both forward and back to feel a stretch in the front of your leg. 8. Hip Internal Rotation (45 seconds each side) Why it works: Deep hip rotator release. Reaches the piriformis and deep six. JME 111 Placing your knee on an elevated surface, rotate your upper body back toward that elevated leg. (This will be very difficult in the office - a bed is ideal for this exercise). 9. Behind-Back Hand Touch (45 seconds) Why it works: Deep shoulder stretch in multiple planes simultaneously. JME 49 Try to touch your hands behind your back - with one arm coming from above and the other below. 10. Seated Forward Fold (60 seconds) Why it works: Final deep stretch integrating the entire posterior chain. JME 92 In your chair, bend your upper body forward and reach down toward the floor.
